Support Forum for Patients and Cancer Survivors
The Mohawk Valley Health System’s Cancer Center’s monthly support forum for patients and cancer survivors will be held on Monday, May 8, 2017, at 6 p.m.The cancer support forum meets the second Monday of every month at 6 p.m. in the Cancer Center’s Fireplace Lounge on the main floor of Faxton Campus, 1676 Sunset Avenue, Utica.
The forum, led by the Cancer Center’s social worker, offers support to anyone who has received a cancer diagnosis. Meetings cover a wide variety of issues including: how to talk with children about mom or dad having cancer, financial concerns, physical issues, intimacy issues and nutrition during treatments, plus many more. The forum provides a comfortable atmosphere for patients and cancer survivors to come together and share useful information. This can be a beneficial way to learn how to deal with various issues including surgery, chemotherapy or radiation, and is a key element in recovery.

After Breast Cancer Support Group Meeting
On Saturday, May 13, 2017, the After Breast Cancer (ABC) Support Group will meet at 11 a.m. in the Community Room at the Center for Rehabilitation and Continuing Care Services on the St. Luke’s Campus, 1650 Champlin Avenue, Utica. Medical Oncologist and Hematologist Dr. Alicia DeTraglia will lead the meeting with a discussion about Oncotype DX, which is a 21-gene prognostic assay that can help identify patients who are most likely to derive benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy.
ABC Support Group meetings are free and open to the public and were created by women who have had breast cancer. The group is dedicated to providing education, information and emotional support to women and men who are facing biopsy, surgery or recovery from breast cancer.
