Ultrasound is a painless, non-invasive test that uses sound waves and sophisticated computer software to produce images. The pictures can evaluate the size and shape of internal organs as well as blood flow within veins and arteries. Some of the more commonly ordered tests look at the abdominal organs, pelvic organs, carotid arteries and the veins of the arms and legs. For pregnant women, ultrasound often provides the very first baby pictures as well as checking the baby’s growth and looking for any abnormalities using three-dimensional and four-dimensional imaging.
All of our sonographers (the technologist performing your exam) are Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (RDMS).

More Information About Our Ultrasound Services
Most tests take under 30 minutes and involve putting a warm ultrasound “gel” on the skin over the area to be imaged. The technologist then glides a transducer (sound-wave wand) over the skin in a precise manner to obtain high quality pictures. They will often input information on the keyboard as your exam is being done to label and highlight areas for the physician who will view the images.
The American College of Radiology (ACR) has designated Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare, an affiliate of Mohawk Valley Health System, as an Ultrasound Center of Excellence.
