Medical Center Construction Updates

This page will have the most up-to-date construction and traffic updates regarding the new MVHS Medical Center being built in downtown Utica, NY.

On Thursday, October 10, 2019, assembly will begin on the construction fence that will surround the site of the new Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS) regional medical center in Downtown Utica. The fence will be placed around the location of the future medical center building and will run from State Street along Columbia Street to Broadway; along Broadway to Lafayette Street; down Lafayette Street back to State Street; and along State Street to Columbia Street.
Assembly of the fencing will continue for approximately ten business days. Jersey barriers will be placed along the perimeter of the building site with the fencing following that placement. The barriers will be placed in the parking lanes along Columbia and Lafayette Streets and will be on the inside of the sidewalks along State Street and Broadway.

Once the fence is in place, abatement of the buildings in the site of the new medical center building will commence.

Traffic Impacts

  • Once the assembly of the fencing begins, street parking from State Street to Broadway on Columbia and Lafayette Streets will no longer be available.
  • Additionally, Cornelia Street, from Columbia to Lafayette will be closed to traffic when the fence is completed.

The aforementioned streets will see potential traffic delays during the delivery of the Jersey barriers and placement of the fencing. These delays could occur from Thursday, October 10, 2019, through Thursday, October 24, 2019 (depending on how long assembly takes). A flagger will be on site to direct traffic around the trucks delivering the barriers. Delivery and assembly of the fence will take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. each business day.

The fencing provided is for several reasons: site safety, security control and will provide for restricted access to workers only.
