Jonathan Blancaflor, MD, FACS, a specialist in General, Colorectal and Thoracic Surgery, has joined the MVHS Advanced Endoscopy and Surgical Group – St. Luke’s Campus, Professional Office Building (POB) and has been named medical director for Robotic Surgery at Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS).

Q&A with Dr. Blancaflor

Prior to joining the MVHS Medical Group, Dr. Blancaflor was in general surgical practice for 25 years at Shoreline Surgical Associates, P.C., in Middletown, Connecticut. His particular interests include minimally invasive procedures and robotic surgery. He has served as senior attending in General Surgery; director of the Advanced Telemedicine and Videoscopic Surgery Center; director of Robotics; and surgeon champion of the American College of Surgeons National Quality Patient Safety Initiative, all at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, Connecticut.

Dr. Blancaflor received his medical degree from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, with honors in Surgery, in Farmington, Connecticut. He completed a residency in general surgery and served as chief resident in General Surgery at Yale University/Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven, Connecticut, and a residency in General Surgery at the University of Connecticut Surgical Residency at New Britain General Hospital in New Britain, Connecticut. He received his Bachelor of Science in Biology, magna cum laude, from Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, was designated a Scholar of the College and was named to the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society.

He is board certified in General Surgery by the American Board of General Surgery. Dr. Blancaflor served as section chief for General Surgery at Middlesex Hospital for eight years and on the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Chapter, American College of Surgeons Connecticut Surgical Quality Collaborative for the past three years. He has also been course director for the Yale/Middlesex Advanced Laparoscopic Skills Course in Middletown, and for the Yale University Advanced Laparoscopic Suturing Course in Cape Town, South Africa.

Dr. Blancaflor is a member of the American College of Surgeons; American College of Surgeons, Connecticut Chapter; Connecticut Surgical Quality Collaborative; Connecticut Medical Society; Middlesex County Medical Society; and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.
